About Johann Georg Dillis (from reverse): Born in 1759, died in 1841. Like the romanticists Hess and Robell he painted in the classicist way, preparing the coming "Munich" landscape-painting for which the present picture is a typical example. He is the oldest representative of the naturalism evolving from the rococo. In 1822 he became director of the Munich Galleries where he influenced the disposition of the paintings in the Ancient Pinacotheca.
