Dimensions: 8 5/8" W x 6" T (15" W x 12 1/2" T overall with frame)
Condition: Good. Frame has cosmetic wear. Backing paper is torn and taped in several spots. Etching is very good with mild yellowing around the edges consistent with age. Please see photos.
Details: This framed pressed etching is of the 1859 original titled "Thames Police" by James McNeill Whistler. Frame appears to date ca. 1950. Etching is likely much older, ca. 1880-1900.
About the artist: James McNeill Whistler was an American, born in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1834. He attended West Point, but was forced to leave before graduation. Skilled as a draughtsman, he turned naturally to art, and went to Paris to study. He gained his first recognition in 1857 with his series of etchings known as "The French Set." Although famed for his etchings, many of his paintings are accepted as masterpieces. Whistler died in London in 1903.
