Condition: Very good antique condition. Dish has a couple minor dings. No silver loss except at top lip rim. Liner shows considerable wear and silver loss. Please see photos.
Details: A round, low, straight-sided dish with foliate handles and four scrolled paw feet. Engraved on one side with the family crest of Allfrey, a griffin's head with a crown around the neck between two ostrich plumes. Liner lifts out with one small shell-shaped handle at the rim. Considerable silver loss and deep scratches on interior of liner commensurate with age and use. There is space between the vessels is intended for hot water or crushed ice to keep the food to temperature. Interior of outer dish is a darker metal, and quite heavy.
Old Sheffield Plate is a method of plating metal in which a sheet of copper is fused between two sheets of silver, creating a durable decorative surface. Developed in 1740 by Sheffield cutler Thomas Boulsover, it provided an affordable alternative to Sterling silver.
