Details: These sterling silver decanter labels by The Steiff Company were made exclusively for the shops at Colonial Williamsburg beginning in the early 1950’s. Each piece is stamped with the Williamsburg Restoration mark as well as “STIEFF / STERLING” on the back.
As stated in the 1952 Stieff Dealers Book of Williamsburg Sterling Silver, “This Hall Mark will be found on all Williamsburg Restoration approved sterling silver reproductions - made only by Stieff under exclusive license. The extended figure 4 and the double X, to which a shipper’s or marker’s initials were often added, formed a merchant’s mark used in early Virginia. It is an ancient symbol of quality, honesty, and integrity. Only sterling silver bearing this mark is approved by Williamsburg Restoration. Any which does not bear this Hall Mark is not approved by, nor does it have any connection with the Restoration. For your protection look for this Hall Mark. - THE STIEFF COMPANY, Baltimore”
