Established at the end of the 17th century by King William III to provide a safer route between Kensington Palace and St. James's Palace, which was lit with 300 oil lamps to deter highwaymen, Rotten Row was the first artificially lit highway in Britain. In the 18th and 19th centuries it became a popular meeting place for upper-class Londoners to ride their horses and been seen around the track.
