Antique Late 19th-Century Salt-Glazed Stoneware 1-Gallon Merchant Butter Churn — Complete 3-Piece Set
Stenciled Advertising: "W L Williams & Bro. / Dealers in Groceries Dry Goods / Oak Grove VA"
Provenance & Regional History:
This exceptional piece of Southern Americana was recently recovered directly from an old, historic farmhouse in Mathews County, Virginia. It stands as a beautiful testament to the late 19th-century Chesapeake Bay trade networks, where steamships frequently carried mercantile goods and household primitives between the Northern Neck and the Middle Peninsula.

Custom-stenciled for the general store of W.L. Williams & Brother in Oak Grove, Virginia, this is a highly desirable 1-gallon domestic size. While larger 3-to-5-gallon churns are cumbersome, this highly collectible 1-gallon size is perfect for country kitchen counters, cabinets, and premium hearth displays.
Measurements:
- Stoneware Crock Diameter: 5-1/4 inches
- Stoneware Crock Height: 8-1/2 inches (8-3/4 inches with the wood lid on)
- Total Height (With Plunger in Crock): 19.5 inches
Key Features & Components:
- Complete 3-Piece Set: Includes the salt-glazed stoneware advertising crock body, the original stepped/flanged wood guide lid, and the full-length wooden dasher rod complete with its four-hole perforated bottom agitation disk.
- Authentic Period Stencil: Dark, highly legible block lettering across the face proudly advertising the historic Virginia dry goods merchant.
- Pottery Details: The unglazed base displays authentic circular wire-cut marks from the potter's wheel, along with minor iron spots (pyrite pops) and factory glaze anomalies normal for period kiln firings. No capacity number is stamped, which is common for custom-ordered merchant wares of this size.
Condition Report:
Excellent antique condition overall. The stoneware body is remarkably clean with no major structural vertical hairline cracks, restorations, or large modern chips. The wood lid and dasher retain a beautiful, deep natural aged patina and show expected historic wear and fine grain splitting consistent with a 100+ year old primitive item. Please review the high-resolution photos carefully to confirm condition details.
