Details: A small-scale formal portrait of an English country manor house in a pastoral setting. The four-story house is set in a country landscape with a strolling couple in the mid foreground, as well as clusters of sheep. There appears to have been some hand-coloring, particularly with greens in the vegetation and a shade of red in the lady's dress. There is also a very faint pink cast to the body of the house. Marked at the bottom left edge of the image "J. Salmon, Del't", and on the bottom right edge of the image "Engraved by J. Rogers". The print is matted in cream, with a narrow wood frame in antiqued gold and green.
Finchcocks is an early Georgian country manor house, built in 1725, in Goudhurst, Kent, England. It is named for the family who lived on the site in the 13th Century. The house is noted for its brickwork and has a dramatic front elevation attributed to the architect Thomas Archer. It sits on 25 acres of parkland, including orchards, formal lawns and gardens. The house has passed through several hands as a private home. During World War II, students and teachers of the Kings School Rochester were housed there until it was requisitioned by the Army. In the 1960s it served as a school for the Legat Ballet. In 1976, under new ownership, the manor house became a museum of musical instruments, primarily keyboards, such as fortepianos, harpsichords and pianos. While the majority of the collection was auctioned prior to the sale of the property, the house now hosts courses for pianists, and charitable concerts. J. Salmon was the oldest established publisher of calendars and postcards in Britain, opening in 1880 in Kent, and closing in 1880.
