Spill vases were a common household item in the 19th century. Often made in a flattened shape to fit on a mantel, they nearly always had a wider mouth to accommodate the spills.  Spills were thin wooden sticks or long tightly twisted paper used to transfer flame, as from a fire to a candle, before the wide availability of household matches.
