John Hoare, known as Captain Hoare, was born in Cork, Ireland in 1822.  He learned glass cutting from his father and worked in a number of glass houses in England until he emigrated to New York in 1853.  He formed the the glass-cutting department of the Brooklyn Flint Glass Company in 1855, and bought their equipment.  He opened a cutting shop in Corning, NY in 1868, and by 1873, had moved all his family and business to Corning.  John Hoare was a master cutter, winning awards at exhibitions in Boston, Philadelphia and Baltimore.  At the Columbia Exhibition in 1893, he won four awards including the gold medal.  J Hoare & Co. furnished cut glass to the White House during the Grant administration.

In the 1870s and early 1880s, J. Hoare & Co. was one of the largest glass-cutting firms in the country.  After John's death in 1896, the company remained in the hands of his sons until its closure in 1920, due to the decline of the cut glass industry.  The trademark on the above piece was registered in 1895, and may have been used on paper labels, but it is generally agreed that it was not acid etched on glass pieces until 1901 or 1902.
