About the artist: Martin LaBorde was born in a small rural community in central Louisiana in 1943 with a hearing defect and spent the first twenty years of his life in near total silence. As a result, his visual sense was heightened and he developed a rich inner life to compensate for that part of reality that had been denied to him. He developed advanced creative thinking and a connection to the mystical, spiritual, and alternative perceptions of reality. He loved and communicated best with animals and they became his closest friends, the reason he puts animals in so many of his paintings today.
As a handicapped child growing up in the 50's, LaBorde faced many who did not understand or accept his deafness saying they thought he had a mental problem or was unintelligent. But he proudly says, "I knew I was smart, I just couldn't hear or talk." As a child, he would lie on the ground and look up at the moon, saying it always smiled at him, it always returned and that gave him comfort. It's no surprise the moon makes an appearance in almost every one of his creations.
His work is infused with imagery that has its roots in a lifetime of hardship, experiences and spiritual quest. They are a map of his soul manifest in a little character called Bodo who revealed himself to the artist in 1973 after a life changing experience atop an ancient pyramid in Mexico. He claims that Bodo represents all that is good in the world - a child with an old soul's spirit. Another common visual in his work is the black background, representing LaBorde's silent world. He says, "we all have a silentness within us and sometimes, we must go there."
Martin attended art school, and was quickly recognized for his talent. Later in life with the guidance and help of his wife, Ella, LaBorde was able to have corrective surgery to his ears, giving him the ability to hear and then learn to speak. Martin LaBorde is an amazing, thought provoking, highly collected artist that lives his life to the fullest, inspiring the world along the way.
