Details: The original of this desk & bookcase was made for the Updyke family in the 1770s and was one of ten block-fronted examples crafted by members of the Townsend & Goddard families of Kingston and Newport, Rhode Island. Block fronting, or the raised-recessed-raised triad of panels with the carved shell decoration was a uniquely American design. Just like in the original, 17 drawers and six compartments line this reproduction desk, and the ten separate sections in the bookcase are channeled to allow numerous subdivisions.
