An exceptional piece of North Carolina history and Mid-Century Modern wearable art. This substantial statement brooch was hand-forged by legendary jeweler, artist, and environmental activist Carolista Baum at her famous studio shop in Nags Head, Outer Banks (OBX), NC.
Carolista Baum is celebrated nationwide for her defiant stance in 1973 where she stood in front of bulldozers to save the iconic sand dunes of what is now Jockey's Ridge State Park. Aside from her historic activism, she was an incredibly accomplished studio jeweler whose organic, brutalist metalwork remains highly sought after by regional historians and fine modernist jewelry collectors alike.
Design & Craftsmanship:
This striking abstract piece features heavily textured, folded, and molten sterling silver sheets that emulate the organic ridges of wind-blown coastal dunes. The silver perfectly cradles a frosted pane of authentic pale-green Outer Banks sea glass. The metal frame is beautifully highlighted by organic, fluid yellow-gold molten accents along the folds, accented by two small, brilliant-cut genuine diamonds that mimic shimmering ocean water catching the sun.

Provenance & Authentication Note:
Like many of Carolista's studio boutique pieces sold directly off her workbench to visitors, this piece is physically unsigned. However, it carries flawless direct-purchase provenance, acquired directly from the original owner who purchased it firsthand from Carolista Baum at her Outer Banks studio shop. To guarantee metal authenticity, the silver base has been non-destructively tested via X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Spectrometry to verify its genuine high-quality silver alloy composition.
