A stunningly executed, original turn-of-the-century pen and ink illustration study titled "Their First Quarrel." This piece is a stroke-for-stroke technical mastery exercise mimicking the highly celebrated work of American graphic artist Charles Dana Gibson, the creator of the iconic "Gibson Girl". The drawing captures a young Edwardian man and woman sitting back-to-back, engrossed in books during a lovers' spat. The line control, cross-hatching, and deep ink work beautifully replicate the highly precise "Gibson Style" taught in elite art academies during the Golden Age of American Illustration. It is executed on rare, imported Reynolds’s Bristol Board (London), a luxury multi-ply paper prized by 19th and early 20th-century masters for its ability to handle heavy ink saturation without warping or bleeding.
Production Markings: The bottom right margin features faint, hand-written vintage framing/production measurements (13 x 16 and 77 x 20), highlighting its history as a working studio piece.
The Signature: The drawing features a beautifully integrated, calligraphic cursive monogram signature of the executing artist, "J.M.B.", on the far right, alongside the handwritten title on the bottom left margin.
Condition Report: Excellent antique condition. The ink remains incredibly dark and sharp. The heavy Bristol Board remains flat and structurally sound. There is a 1/2" tear at the upper right edge, and a small torn corner. There is light, age related toning/foxing along the outer margins. Please see photos.
