A magnificent, large-scale antique glass cloche (bell jar dome) featuring stunning physical hallmarks of traditional, early glassblowing. Perfect for creating a high-end Victorian vignette, protecting delicate plants as an indoor garden terrarium, or elevating a French farmhouse bakery or cheese display.
Because of its substantial size, surviving examples in this condition are incredibly scarce.
Genuine Antique Characteristics & Craftsmanship:
- Hollow-Blown Finial Handle: Unlike mass-produced modern reproductions with solid glass knobs, this piece features a traditional hollow-blown finial. The interior cavity extends all the way up into the handle—a technique used by historic glassblowers to manage cooling rates and keep the top beautifully balanced.
- Raw, Unpolished Bottom Rim: The base features a flat, rough, unpolished rim typical of utilitarian 19th-century glass. It is not ground smooth by modern machines, beautifully showcasing its authentic period production.
- Organic Inclusions: The glass body features charming, scattered air bubbles (seeds) trapped during the hand-blown process, giving the dome immense character and a wavy, historic texture.
- Wood Base Included: Please note the included wooden display base is not original to the glass dome. The bottom glass rim rests on top of the raised inner platform rather than seating down into the recessed groove. It displays well, but is not a flush, custom fit pair.
Measurements:
- Height: 15 inches (including the finial)
- Base Diameter: 11 inches
Condition Report:
Excellent antique condition with no cracks, major chips, or deep scratches. There is some light, authentic cloudiness/haze along the bottom rim and the upper neck area, which is incredibly common for glass of this age due to historic mineral scaling. The base rim has natural roughness from the manufacturing process as described. Please note the recessed channel in the wooden base does not match the dome base. The dome sits on top of the flat surface rather than fitting inside the groove. Please see photos.
