Magnificent Scale – Crystal Clear Glass – Rare Internal Devitrification Starburst
An authentic antique hand-blown glass cloche (bell jar/display dome) dating from the late 19th to early 20th century. This is a premium, high-quality domestic piece originally crafted for indoor display or garden use to nurture seedlings. It features an elegant flared bottom and a brilliant, crystal-clear clarity that beautifully sets it apart from rougher, green-tinted utilitarian field glass.
Key Dimensions:
- Height: 16 inches
- Bottom Diameter: 13 3/8 inches (at the widest point of the flared edge)
- Weight: Substantial and heavy antique glass (built to last)
Authentic Antique Characteristics & Condition:
- Hand-Blown Workmanship: Features gorgeous horizontal striations (straw marks) and gentle glass waves visible along the body, showcasing true old-world manual production.
- Fire-Polished Rim: The bottom rim features a beautifully finished, smooth, rounded, and glossy edge. This labor-intensive finish was reserved for high-end glass to prevent scratching fine furniture surfaces.
- Internal Snowflake/Starburst Handle Phenom: Trapped deep inside the thick, solid glass knob handle is a striking example of natural devitrification. During its slow cooling process over a century ago, the silica beautifully crystallized into a snowflake/starburst formation. This is entirely stable, completely smooth to the touch on the outside, and serves as a magnificent "fingerprint" of its antique age.
- Condition: Excellent antique condition. No cracks, major chips, or cloudy "glass sickness." Displays beautifully with magnificent clarity under any light.
