A truly unique, highly documented piece of turn-of-the-century American folk art: a hand-burned pyrography bentwood pantry/keepsake box, explicitly dated and signed from Christmas 1903 in Norfolk, Virginia.
While standard wood-burned antiques of this era rely heavily on generic, store-bought stencils, this remarkable artifact features an entirely original, custom narrative cartoon on the lid that captures a snapshot of localized Edwardian humor.
Artwork Details & Storyline
- The Main Lid: Depicts an incredibly expressive, wide-eyed caricature of a panicked man caught completely off guard behind a high brick wall. He is throwing his hands up in utter defeat, sweating bullets, and shouting a direct quote in stylized period calligraphy: “Tush! Is it." ("Tush" was a common 1900s exclamation of annoyance and disbelief—the equivalent of shouting "Nonsense! Is this really happening?!").
- The Comedy Element: Floating directly to the right of the man's head is a wonderfully detailed cartoon mosquito sporting a gentleman's top hat, striped legs, and outspread wings. Norfolk, Virginia was historically infamous for its heavy coastal mosquito populations. This entire layout is a brilliant, 123-year-old regional satire about surviving the local bugs.
- The Container Base: In striking artistic contrast to the comic lid, the perimeter of the box is wrapped in traditional, highly detailed Art Nouveau folk art. It features elegant floral sprigs, a forest scene containing a little cottage with a smoking chimney, and a beautiful side-profile portrait of a woman.

- The Base External Bottom: Incised with large block text reading "1903 T.R.W." flanking a central manufacturing pivot point.
- Inside Lid: Features the artist's full, elegant cursive signature hand-burned into the wood grain: "T. R. White".
