Condition: Excellent pre-owned antique condition. Silver on lid is wearing through to copper beneath, less so on sides. Some minor movement of wood in lining. Wear on bottom of all four feet. Please see photos.
Details: Repousse silverplated box with hinged lid and four bun feet. Scene on top depicts men, women, and a few children gathered in a tavern or meeting house. Egg and dart design trim on outer edge of lid. Bands of scrolls, shells, and floral designs border the sides of box. Wider band of a pictorial around bottom sides of box depict parents with children and people dancing in domestic spaces. Bottom of box is plain silver plate, stamped at center with E. G. Webster & Son's Gothic "E G W & S" in individual blocks.
"Old Dutch style repousse" refers to metalwork, primarily silver or silverplate, with heavy relief often featuring floral or geometric patterns. Heavy, three-dimensional designs are typical. This style is characteristic of Dutch silver work from the 16th to 18th centuries.
