Item: Set of 10 Decorative Plates

Make:  Elite Works, Limoges, France (a division of Bawo & Dotter, New York)

Age:  1920-1932

Construction:  Porcelain

Dimensions:  1" Deep x 9 1/2" Diameter

Condition: Very good vintage condition. One repaired crack. several very minor chips on very edge, some minor gold loss. One plate has what appears to be a chip or flaw on outer edge under gold glaze. Please see photos. 

Details: Decorative white porcelain plates individually decorated in black, charcoal grey and gold. Each plate is painted with a different sealife designs featuring crabs, crayfish, snails, various rays, fish, octopi, and a recurring golden koi.  Some plates feature varying degrees of moriage. Depth and movement are suggested by concentric rings and sinuous lines echoing waves.  Reticulated edges punctuated at 6 places with solid circles containing golden stars. Outer edges are painted in heavy gold.  One plate is marked on back with Bawo & Dotter's red Elite Works backstamp, dating the set to 1920-1932.  The remaining plates each bear a hand-painted red open heart mark containing an upper case L.

Bawo & Dotter were a New York-based importer of porcelain and decorative items, established in the 1860s.  They founded thier own decorating company, the Elite Works, in Limoges in the 1870s, and began producing and decorating their own porcelain in the 1890s.  The company merged into Guerin-Pouyat-Elite in 1924.
