Condition: Fair antique condition. Significant wear and some tears to spine, although gold decoration is still largely visible. Wear to edges and corners of boards. Spine cover is separating along front edge. Front and backend papers split and board and spine covers have come loose. Interior binding strong, very slight toning on edges. No foxing, fading of text or illustrations. No damage to hand-painted harebells and herb Robert spray on front cover.
Details: Light brown full leather bound volume, with gold decoration and lettering on spine and covers. Front cover is further decorated with a hand-painted spray of Harebells and Herb Robert, in shades of pink, lavender and blue, with green foliage. Marbled endpapers. Handwritten owner's signature inside front endpaper, dated 1885.
Frederick Edward Hulme was a teacher and amateur botanist, and a professor of Freehand and Geometrical Drawing at Kings College London. This volume was the first series in what would eventually be a nine volume set.
