Item: Ceramic Advertising Vessel

Make:  Unknown (USA)

Age: Late 19th - Early 20th Century

Construction:  Glazed Stoneware

Dimensions:  13" Tall x 14" Diameter

Condition:  Very good vintage condition. Some loss of color in lettering. Several noticeable surface cracks, Some chips/wear/rust on inside top rim. Please see photos.

Details: Heavy, white-glazed ceramic sphere with open top sitting on an orange-brown flat round base. Raised molded "straps" at four points around the white sphere extend to the bottom of the base with raised slotted points on the base, giving the appearance of leather or metal straps holding the sphere on the flat base. Red and black letters in a shaded font declare "GRAHAM & MOORE  NO. 37  MARKET SQUARE  NORFOLK,VA" on one side and "IMPORTERS OF CHINA, GLASS, & QUEENSWARE" on the other. On either side of the arched lettering, American flags unfurl. No discernible makers marks.  Cracks in bottom of base, as well as at several places around rim.

As early as 1688, there was an open air vegetable market in downtown Norfolk, Virginia.  The area, known as City Market or Market Square, was home to fruit and vegetable sellers, fishmongers and vendors of all kinds.  In the 1890's, many vendors made themselves at home in the City Market building, also known as the Armory.  In 1923, the market moved to a new building behind the Armory.  Curbside vendors set up their wares under umbrella sheds provided by the city. This piece was probably used outside or in front of a booth or market space as advertisement for the vendor.
