Details: Black lacquered wood walking stick with brass tip and resin handle in the shape of a spaniel's head. Resin resembles ivory, and is very finely detailed with "fur" following the growth patterns and curly ears. Mouth is tinted red inside and appears to be partially open, and a small lever under chin allows the sprung lower jaw to be opened. This device was popular during the mid-to-late 19th century as a glove holder. A well-dress gentleman would remove his gloves and the walking stick would hold them. Head is attached to the walking stick by a brass ferrule or "collar". Narrow crack in the resin at center back from collar to brass ferrule appears to have been a fitting feature. Signs of gentle wear on top of dog's nose, snout, and top and back of head give the impression that the walking stick was well loved. Brown glass eyes set into eye sockets. No discernible maker's marks.
