About the Artist: Daniel Bigelow was born on a farm in Peru, New York, and developed a strong passion for painting at an early age. He was greatly influenced by Asahel Lynde Powers, who taught him the delicate nature of working with colors. At the age of 20, Bigelow moved to New York City, where he was first exposed to the work of professional painters and ultimately decided to pursue it as a career himself. In 1858, he relocated to Chicago and established a studio in Crosby's Opera House, which unfortunately was later destroyed in the catastrophic Chicago fire of 1871. In 1887, Bigelow was invited to become a charter member of the Academy of Design, which later evolved into the renowned Art Institute of Chicago. He proudly displayed his art in numerous galleries, including the National Academy of Design, World's Columbian Exposition, and Philadelphia's Centennial Exposition of 1876. Bigelow passed away peacefully in his sleep in Chicago in 1910.
