The Marshall Pottery was founded by F. W. Rocker in 1895 in Marshall, Texas, producing hand-thrown utilitarian pottery. Imperfections in glaze and other cosmetic flaws were overlooked in favor of functionality. With the advent of glass canning jars the pottery almost folded, but the need for stoneware jugs during the Prohibition period kept them afloat. The company would eventually become the largest producer of red clay pots in the United States.
