An authentic 19th-century primitive hand-turned kitchen bowl. This beautiful piece comes directly out of a historic estate in Susan, Virginia—a quiet, old coastal community in Mathews County along the Chesapeake Bay. It is a true survivor of Tidewater Virginia history, reflecting the honest, hardworking heritage of the region's early families.
This piece features a gorgeous, highly figured burl wood grain with a fantastic rippled texture across the outer walls. The interior showcases distinct, crisp horizontal factory lathe tooling rings near the upper rim.
Condition: This is a true utilitarian piece with heavy, honest historic wear. The bottom center interior is deeply grooved, frayed, and textured from decades of use with an early metal chopping knife. The wood has aged naturally to a rich, dark patina. The underside features a clear circular lathe mark, along with minor expected aging splits and tiny old wormholes but its solid and water tight. It is structurally solid and holds its form beautifully, but due to the deep historic chopping texture, it is strictly for decorative display only (not food safe).
