A fantastic, completely original piece of 19th-century frontier history. This 11.75-inch "homespun" antique powder horn was constructed from natural bovine (cow/ox) horn for rugged everyday utility by a frontiersman or hunter, prioritizing pure function over decorative military flair. Max diameter 2 7/8”.
Unique Design Features:
- Dual-Purpose Priming Spout: What makes this specific horn incredibly unique is the tapered wooden stopper peg at the narrow tip. It has been cleverly bored out through the center to function as a secondary dispensing funnel. This allowed the shooter to prime a flintlock flashpan precisely without needing a separate priming horn or removing the main plug.
- Original Construction: Features a thick, hand-fitted wooden base plug on the wide end. Securely anchored into the base cap is a heavy metallic strap loop showing a beautiful, authentic green oxidation (verdigris) patina. A simple leather carrying cord remains tied to both ends.
Condition & Preservation:
- Size: Measures approximately 11.75 inches long when following the outer natural curve of the horn.
- Honest Wear: The horn exhibits a wonderful dark, amber-aged coloration with natural hairline texture marks acquired from decades of genuine handling.
- Important Note on Plugs: The original wooden base plug is firmly set and "frozen" in place due to natural, age-related expansion and contraction of the organic materials. Out of respect for its historical integrity, no attempt has been made to force it open, keeping the horn perfectly stable, original, and free from structural cracks or modern alteration.
