Details: Small enamel plate with central court scene decorated with a 1 1/2" border of light green with clusters of peaches, pears, quinces, and flowers with bats depicted between. Colors are vibrant, primarily greens, apricots and pinks with touches of blue. White enamel bottom and exterior and bottom. Brass rim and foot edge.
Bats represent good luck in Chinese art. This is because the Chinese word for "bat" and the word for "good fortune" sound the same. Similarly, the word for "upside down" and that for "arrived" sound alike. Therefore, a bat depicted upside down means that "good fortune has arrived".
