Details: First appearing in 1848, the the kugel is the earliest form of German glass Christmas decoration. It's predecessor, the "witch ball", was made from unsilvered glass and hung from windows to ward off evil spirits, who were supposedly repulsed by round shapes. The blown, molded, figural glass ornaments we know today are evolved from the tradition of blowing kugels.
