The Pfeiffer & Lowenstein Factory was first established in 1873 by Ludwig Lowenstein in Ostrov, Czech Republic (then Schlackenwerth, Bohemia, Austria). The factory came to be managed by Josef Pfeiffer in the early 20th century when the name then became Pfeiffer & Lowenstein. PSL refers to the Pfeiffer & Lowenstein Factory of Schlackenwerth, Bohemia, Austria. The company operated until 1938 when it was seized by the Nazis who then renamed it "Porcelain Factory Schlackenwerth Josef Pfeiffer". After the war, the owners were Luise and Wilhelm Pfeiffer and George von Hoffman until it closed in 1949
