Item: 2 Gallon Jug
Make: Peter Herrmann (Baltimore, Maryland)
Age: Circa 1850-1872
Construction: Salt Glazed Stoneware
Dimensions: Approximately 13 3/4" Tall x 8" Diameter Base
Condition: This jug is in excellent, clean antique condition. The body is structurally sound and lacks the severe base chips or major star-cracks often found on heavy stoneware of this age. The handle joints are sturdy and tight. The unglazed bottom is remarkably intact. (Please review all high-resolution photos closely to inspect the natural kiln pings, surface texture variations, and minor historic shelf wear inherent to authentic 19th-century pottery).
Details: Produced by potter Peter Herrmann in his shop which was located on Edgar St. in Baltimore and operated from 1850-1872. The jug features a fully legible circular impressed stamp on the upper shoulder reader " P. Hermann" surrounding a "2g" capacity mark. The exterior displays a classic "orange peel" salt glaze finish with natural tonal variations in the tan and brown clay.
