Antique J. CATRE Huntingdon PA 1 Gal Stoneware Ovoid Jug, Cobalt, c. 1840

An incredibly scarce, authentic 1-gallon salt-glazed stoneware ovoid jug featuring the rare variant maker's stamp from early American potter John Cater/Catre in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania. Active primarily during the 1830s and 1840s, this localized workshop's pieces are highly prized additions to advanced collections of Central Pennsylvania or Mid-Atlantic Americana.

This vessel features a classic, early bulbous ovoid form that tapers beautifully down to a flat, unglazed base. The front is decorated with a striking, hand-painted brushed cobalt blue slip double-leaf/floral motif. Directly above the cobalt decoration is a crisp, deeply impressed oval manufacturer's stamp reading with the highly collectible surname spelling: "J. CATRE / Huntingdon".
