Carving decoys from the thick base of a palm frond or trunk is a distinct Southern folk art tradition, concentrated heavily along the coastal Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida. This is a brilliant example of a hunter utilizing local, lightweight material to shape a working rig.

The body of the decoy is in solid, beautifully preserved condition. Please note that the beak/bill is missing, having sheared off cleanly at the base during its working life. The exposed break perfectly reveals the natural, untouched fibrous interior pith core of the palm stalk, confirming that no modern dowels or structural alterations have ever been made to this bird.
