Antique Richard Remmey Philadelphia 2G Stoneware Jar with 1/2G Blunder Mark

A unique piece of 19th-century American history: a tall-form cylindrical salt-glazed stoneware storage jar, attributed directly to the famed Richard Clinton Remmey Pottery of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (circa 1865-1880).

This piece stands 12” tall with an 8” diameter, matching the physical proportions, volume, and footprint of a standard 2-gallon tall pantry jar. It features freehand-brushed cobalt blue leafy vines framing stylized Remmey tulip blossoms wrapping beautifully around the shoulders.

1. Factory "Blunder Mark" / Mismarked Capacity
This jar features a rare, highly collectible manufacturing error. Stamped into the shoulder inside the classic Remmey cogged crescent ring is a 1/2 gallon fraction stamp. The potter accidentally struck this massive 2-gallon capacity jar with a half-gallon stamp. Mismarks and factory blunders like this are considered a great find among stoneware enthusiasts as they offer an unpolished, human look into 19th-century industrial pottery labor.

2. Tooled Base Groove / Molded Foot Rim
A standout feature of this specific cylinder is the pronounced, molded groove running continuously around the baseline just above the foot. This structural detail is a classic hallmark of elite Philadelphia potting technique from the 1870s, utilized by the Remmey shop to provide structural strength and a secure mechanical grip when handling heavy utility vessels.

3. 19th-Century Crystalline Sulfur Repair
The base of the jar suffered a severe structural fracture long ago. Rather than discarding it, a past owner performed a traditional, professional molten sulfur repair. Two holes were drilled on the exterior bottom to inject liquid elemental sulfur. On the interior, you can see the gorgeous, highly stable mustard-yellow/amber crystalline tracks where the sulfur cooled and sealed the crack line. The repair is completely solid, rigid, and tight all the way around.

Condition Notes:
Please review all photos carefully. The piece features an extensive, completely stable hairline fracture extending through the base and up the side, perfectly held in place by an antique sulfur repair. The repair is entirely stable and tight to the touch. There is some expected minor roughness, pop-outs, and light flaking around the bottom foot rim consistent with age, utility, and its original firing environment. Due to the historic repair, this vessel is being sold strictly as a decorative folk-art piece and should not be used to hold liquids.
