Artist: Hubert R. Lewis (Scottish, 1865-1952)
Title: "The Horse Fair" (Original by Rosa Bonheur, 1855)
Dimensions: 51"x 26" (with frame)
About the Artist: Hubert Robert Lewis was born April 5, 1865 in Govan, Scotland, and died February 1952 in Pennsylvania.
As a steel worker from Wales, he immigrated to the United States with his father on a ship from Ireland to find work in Pennsylvania's steel mills. He later discovered a talent for painting and creating chalk pastels, using his commissions to support his family. His portfolio boasts landscapes, florals, and reproductions of famous artwork.
This, Bonheur’s best-known painting, shows the horse market held in Paris on the tree-lined Boulevard de l’Hôpital, near the asylum of Salpêtrière, which is visible in the left background. The original is currently on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Fifth Avenue Gallery 812.
