Details: Chubby bear cub, walking and looking to the side. Painted in Herend's classic fishnet pattern in rust. Tail and jowl fringes are solid rust. Interiors of ears are pale robin's-egg blue. Mouth, nose and claws are gold. Marked on the bottom of right forefoot with Herend's blue mark and a series of numbers. Incised "HEREND" and some illegible numbers on bottom of opposite foot. No box included.
The Herend Porcelain Manufactory was opened in 1826 in the Hungarian village of the same name, near Lake Balaton, by Vince Stingl. Opening the factory to produce stoneware pots, Stingl got deeper and deeper into research on fine porcelain, eventually verging on bankruptcy. In 1839, Mor Fischer purchased the Manufactory and begin to produce fine porcelain. At the first World's Fair in London, Herend took a gold medal, capturing the attention and admiration of noble and royal families around the world. Queen Victoria ordered a set of Herend china in 1851. Herend porcelain is now exported to over 60 countries around the world.
