Condition: Fair to poor condition. The canvas has been cut from the stretchers. Surface of canvas is in good shape, with a few cracks/tears. There is one old tear in the upper left quadrant that wasn't skillfully repaired. Edges are rough where the painting was cut/torn. Please see photos.
Details: A figure stands on a pathway leading to a distant sunlit cottage set against a dark wood. Finely detailed trees in the foreground frame the idyllic scene as a waterway meanders at their feet. Sunlit branches, wildflowers and marsh plants are picked out in detail. A Hudson River School influence is apparent in the handling of the water and light. Moody, atmospheric woodlands dominate the composition. A blue-grey sky contrasts with the darker foreground vegitation rendered in shades of green and brown. While the painting has sustained some damage, the subject and surface remain intact and, with some conservation steps, it could still be a beautiful work of art.
Herman (Hermann) Geyer was a 19th century American painter, heavily influenced by the Hudson River School. Working in the mid-to late 19th century, he was relatively prolific, producing landscapes featuring serene waterways, snow capped mountains and finely detailed atmospheric woods. Although there is very little available biographical information about him, his numerous works speak volumes.
