In 1939, after the beginning of World War II, Woolworth's approached Homer Laughlin China Company to produce a line of small figurines to replace items previously imported from Japan. The Harlequin animals were the result of this collaboration. There were six originals designs, all apparently made using molds used by other companies as well. The seventh, a turtle, apparently never went into production. They were initially made in the four original Harlequin colors, maroon, spruce, blue (mauve) and Harlequin yellow. The gold glaze appeared later and is associated with the Harlequin yellow glaze. Homer Laughlin produced them for only a few years. China Specialties reintroduced them in the mid-1980s, with a backstamp reading "Maverick Menagerie".
