Item: Framed Etching
Original Artist: William Darton (1755 - 1819)
Age: ca. 1820
Medium: Hand Colored Etching on Paper
Dimensions: 16 1/2" T x 14 1/2" W with frame
Condition: Excellent. Has been professionally matted and framed behind glass.
Details: This piece has been extracted from the full plate etching which features a male counterpart and additional text (some biblical) outside of the oval frame. The image depicts a modestly dressed woman feeding her chickens, standing under a compass inscribed with 'Fear God' and surrounded by the words 'Keep within Compass and you shall be sure to escape many troubles that others endure'. This etching is a noteworthy and scarce masonic allegorical broadside that extols the virtues of self-control and compliance.
