Details: This lively chromolithograph, created on June 24, 1898, and copyrighted by Kurz & Allison, presents a striking depiction of the initial confrontation of the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry (famously known as the "Rough Riders") during the Spanish-American War. This encounter was a significant event near Santiago de Cuba, where American forces overpowered a larger group of Spaniards in an ambush. The Battle of La Quasina (or Las Guasimas) was the first armed conflict for the Rough Riders under the leadership of Colonel Leonard Wood and Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt. The chromolithograph provides a dramatic portrayal of the battlefield, depicting U.S. soldiers actively firing and falling in the foreground.
