This encounter was a significant event near Santiago de Cuba, where American forces overpowered a larger group of Spaniards in an ambush. The Battle of La Quasina (or Las Guasimas) was the first armed conflict for the Rough Riders under the leadership of Colonel Leonard Wood and Lieutenant Colonel Theodore Roosevelt.
