Founded by Frederick Carder in1903 in Corning, New York, Steuben Glass Works was named after the county in which it was based.  Calcite glass was formulated to give an effect between opacity and translucency, and was used to greatest effect in lighting.  Aurene glass was developed by Frederick Carder at Steuben in 1904.  The golden iridescent effect was achieved by spraying the surface of the glass with stannous chloride or lead chloride and reheating under controlled conditions. Crippled by the restrictions in supply during WWI, Steuben Glass Works became the Steuben Division of Corning Glass Works in 1918, and continued to produce colored art glass until 1943.  In 1933, Steuben created a prismatic crystal formula unlike anything else in the world, and is renowned for this even today.
