A spectacular, investment-grade vintage German crystal opal ring dating to the late 1930s or 1940s. This heirloom piece comes complete with its exceptionally rare, original pre-war presentation box from the historic jeweler Heinrich Geier, located at Hauptstr. 163 in Heidelberg, Germany.
The Ring and Craftsmanship:
The ring is beautifully constructed in 14-karat yellow gold and features a highly detailed architectural under-gallery. The design showcase classic late Art Deco to early Retro transition styling, complete with heavy-gauge gold scrollwork and iconic spherical bead accents securing the bezel. The shank measures a sturdy 2.2 mm in width, balancing the substantial 16.4 mm face width of the setting.
The Setting and Hallmarks:
The 4.3g ring is clearly hallmarked with the continental European decimal stamp "585" confirming 14k gold purity. It has been fully verified via XRF (X-ray fluorescence) testing for exact alloy composition and structural integrity.
The Gemstone:
Seated in the secure multi-prong bezel is a magnificent, solid natural crystal opal cabochon measuring 6.4 mm x 9.7 mm. The stone exhibits an incredible, vibrant play-of-color dominated by bright neon green and fiery orange flashes.
Importantly for collectors and dealers, the ring features a completely open-back setting. Looking through the reverse side reveals a fully transparent, continuous crystal structure with identical strong color play on the back. This open-back construction definitively proves that this is a solid, natural opal cabochon, completely ruling out any assembled doublets or triplets.
The Original Box:
The ring is accompanied by its original dome-top presentation box. The interior features a golden silk liner with the jeweler's original script, while the exterior is finished in a timeless mottled faux-tortoiseshell wrap with a brass push-button clasp. Heidelberg's historic Hauptstrasse completely survived the bombings of WWII, which explains how this pristine piece of pre-war luxury and its fragile original box managed to survive together in such immaculate condition.
Condition Report:
Excellent vintage condition. The gold work is structurally sound with no thinning to the shank. The natural opal is securely set, showing incredible fire and no signs of crazing or cracking. The original box shows light surface wear consistent with age, with a fully functional hinge and clasp mechanism. Please see photos.
