The SS America was an ocean liner and cruise ship built in the United States in 1940 for United States Lines and designed by the noted American naval architect William Francis Gibbs. The ship was commissioned in WWII by the navy to transport troops from 1941-1946, before returning to commercial service until its sale in 1964. She is a sister ship to the SS United States, the fastest ocean liner to cross the Atlantic in either direction, and largest to ever be constructed entirely in the United States.
